Hunting Hearing Protection

Hunting Hearing Protection

Hunters who shoot rifles or handguns without hunting hearing protection expose their ears to 140-decibel blasts, far beyond what otolaryngologists consider a safe level. In spite of this, there are hunters who refuse to wear any shield against these harmful sounds. Some claim that they are more effective in tracking their prey when they can hear the natural sounds of the forest. They say that often they hear their quarry long before they see them. Such hunters, however, run the risk of losing their auditory functions because loud reports damage the hair cells of the cochlea.

For this reason, it is always advisable to use hunting hearing protection when shooting at your quarry. If you are one of those hunters who hear before they see, there are electronic acoustic earmuffs that will allow you to hear soft sounds and shield you from loud ones at the same time. You still can hear the breaking of a twig or the rustling of the bushes.

You can also opt for an earmuff equipped with a radio transceiver to facilitate communication with your buddies. You don't want to scare your prey by shouting at your buddies when they are at a distance.

If you say the cup of the earmuffs gets in the way of the stock of your rifle, there are models whose cups have beveled bottoms to minimize this. Better still, you can choose earplugs.

These protective gears will not only safeguard your ears, but actually enhance your experience of stalking your quarry.
