Advances in technology have taken earmuffs from merely passively preventing the entrance of sound into the ears to amplifying soft sounds and muffling loud ones at the same time. Another development is an acoustic earmuff that incorporates either a transceiver or a receiver. In this way, they could easily communicate with their peers, or listen to music.
Some manufacturers, Peltor and American Allsafe among them, now offer earmuffs that not only shields your ears from loud noise. They also allow you to communicate with your peers using an electronic two-way communications system. You can easily spot earmuffs with this capability because of their antenna and microphone. They can have a range of over two miles, and their transmission may either be voice activated (VOX) or through a push-to-talk (PTT) button.
Other models integrate FM/AM receivers, allowing you to listen to your favorite music while you work. This alleviates boredom which could sometimes lead to the employee's inattention and ultimately to accidents. Peltor, Stanley, and Howard Leight are among the manufacturers that offer hearing protection radio earmuffs.
